James Allan, a Scottish schoolmaster from Hendon Board School is credited as being the founder of Sunderland Football Club. He along with other teaching colleagues at a meeting in the Adults School in Norfolk Street formed The Sunderland and District Teachers' Association FC. However, owing to financial difficulties , they allowed members from outside the teaching profession to join, and Sunderland AFC was born in October 1880. Sunderland have won the championship six times, 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1913 and 1936. They have won the FA Cup on two occasions 1937 and 1973.
