Life in the old dog yet! - 29/07/2002
I've been good mates with Chris Wilder for some years now, so when he got the Halifax job and asked me to come along to train, I took him up on the offer. My knee injury will always be a weakness and some days it can really niggle me, however at the moment I'm feeling good. I know that I can't train and play regularly, but I've kept myself fit - as well as training with Chris, I've also played in the Master's Tournament and had a game with Warren Barton and Rob Lee at Durham. Even if I say it myself, I'm knocking the ball about quite well.
In addition to the knee problem, I have to consider my media work. I can't turn round to Tyne Tees and tell them I can't make the studio due to match commitments, they've been good to me and you can't bite the hand that feeds you. I've also been asked back to Singapore, so that means at least a month away from home and competitive football. It's a shame because I've had one or two interesting offers lately, I just wish I had more time! Halifax approached me and after I initially turned them down, I've agreed to sign. They know about my media demands, so I'll probably play the midweek games and take it from there. I actually played a friendly against a reserve Sheff United team, 'the Blades' will always be special to me and I have to say that I enjoyed every minute of it.
When I see Newcastle playing Barcelona in a pre-season friendly, it brings it all back to me. I really can't believe it's nearly four years ago since we met in the Champions League. I'm up at St.James Park covering the game for radio. Tino Asprilla is also back, so it'll be good to catch up with him and see how the rest of the lads are doing. Memories eh, I must be getting old!!
