It's a waiting game

I’m an Everton player but so far this season, although it’s late September, I’ve only played in three games for the club…mainly due to international commitments with the under 21 squad. Last night saw me make my first, first team appearance of the season and although I didn’t have a lot to do, it’s certainly a step in the right direction. We also kept a clean sheet and even though it was only for half an hour or so, clean sheets for any defender are pleasing.

Whereas I’ve been happy with my England performances, every player will tell you that they want first team football – I’m no different. It might be argued that I’ve got time on my side, but if you look at my team-mates in the England squad, they’re all first team regulars.

I received quite a few complements after this months England game against Portugal, and that’s something that I appreciate. However the only complement that really counts is selection on the team sheet, but with the likes of Joseph Yobo, Alan Stubbs, David Weir ahead of me in David Moyes’ plans, I’m having to play a waiting game.

I’m happy with my form, I’m fit, and I’m raring to go. But at the moment I’m more a reserve team regular than first team player. Even after last nights game, I’d be surprised if I was included in the squad for the Leeds game. The clubs results haven't been what the gaffer was hoping for, and it would be fantastic to play a part in putting that right.  But right now, all I can do is keep plugging away and wait for my chance.
