A month off? - 17/12/2003
The holiday period is always a busy time at first team level as games over the Christmas and New Year period come thick and fast. As a result there’s a month break in the reserve team calendar in order to provide cover for injuries and suspension. You never know, I may get the call if there’s a change of thought by David Moyes or if one of the other lads picks up an injury.
After getting back into the first team, and then featuring in the squad, it was back to reserve team action in last weeks 3-2 loss to Man City. We played all right and were a little unlucky to come away with nothing.
A week ago we had the Russian captain on trial with us for a few days, he did OK without being spectacular and at the age of 34 he must be coming to the end of his career. As a young centre-back and at a personal level it’s a bit frustrating when the club is looking to reinforce this area of the squad. All I can do is get my head down and wait for my chance. With the January transfer window about to open it’ll be interesting to see if there are any comings or goings at Everton. As with all players, we only tend to hear about these things in the press, but with the speculation in the press about Nicky Butt and now Christian Bassila, it looks like the gaffer may be after a midfielder.
The Pompey win was very welcome, we’d only been one point in front of them, so it was good to put a bit of daylight between us and them. As a result, there’s been a bit of an extra buzz about the place this week, and it was great for Wayne to get back on the scoresheet. Alan Stubbs referred to the media criticism of our No.18 in a post match interview, and I have to back up what he said. Wayne’s only a young kid and at 18 years old he’s bound to have a bit of inconsistency. In addition to his age it’s also well known that the second season in the Premiership is often the most difficult. He’s a class player and people have to let him develop at his own pace.
