Eagles and the Magpies flying high - 20/03/2005

Eagles and the Magpies flying high

Progress in both the UEFA and FA Cup has certainly given us a lift. There's an air of expectancy around the place and if the FA Cup still looks a tough task, the UEFA Cup isn't quite so formidable. Lisbon drew up here 1-1 but don't read too much into that game. They had already qualified for the knockout stage and let's just say that we're expecting a far more difficult task both home and away. If we are to pick up the UEFA prize we'd also have to overcome some other very decent teams - Villarreal. Auxerre, AZ Alkmar, Moscow and Parma are all well equipped. But I'd place Man Utd and Arsenal in front of all of them. We have the ability to succeed in both competitions and will give it all we have.

Maybe we're fated to win something this year? Newcastle Eagles, after years of trying, won the BBL Trophy earlier this month. It's a tremendous achievement and as a regular fan down at the Metro Arena it's good to see the stands at capacity and success for a Newcastle sports club. Well done to Fab Flournoys side...if you can get a ticket I'd really recommend you take in a game.

At one stage it looked at though my knee injury would keep me out of action for the rest of the season, but in actual fact I've made great progress. Last week I trained with the first team and today I fly out to Dubai to continue my comeback. If the training goes to plan, I may be in contention for the Lisbon game. It does seem an age since I last played and I'm as determined as ever to to be ready if the manager calls. Although some of the other lads are on their way back, we've been missing quite a number of defenders recently and it's been frustrating to sit on the sidelines. Saying that, our defensive record has been excellent and if you had to identify one big change over the last few months, you'd immediately point out the strength of the back four.
