Bury 0 Scunthorpe 1 - 10/12/2003
Substitute Paul Hayes shot Scunthorpe into the LDV Vans Trophy Northern area semi-finals with a silver goal winner against Bury at Gigg Lane.
Hayes, a second half substitute for 17-goal Steve MacLean, was played in by Matt Sparrow and he slotted the ball beyond Glynn Garner after the tie had ended deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes.
Bury, denied by a golden goal at Carlisle in last season's competition, almost equalised straight away through their third and final substitute David Nugent but the youngster's effort was beaten away by goalkeeper Tom Evans at the expense of a corner.
In truth, Scunthorpe, 3-2 winners at Gigg Lane in the league back in August, just about deserved their win.
Sparrow should have scored in the first half while Peter Beagrie hit the woodwork with a 62nd-minute corner and Garner made another couple of good saves from on-loan MacLean and Richard Kell.

Scunthorpe: Evans, McCombe, Byrne, Butler, Sharp, Sparrow, Kell, Barwick, Beagrie, Torpey, MacLean. Subs: Hayes, Lee Ridley, Featherstone, Graves, Capp.
