Press article:
Hayes wins it for Irons - 20/10/2004
Scunthorpe had to work extremely hard to grab the points against workmanlike Southend for a 3-2 victory.
Southend took the lead after half an hour when Fredy Eastwood had the simplest of tasks in heading home from Wayne Gray's pinpoint cross for his fourth goal in two games.
But Scunthorpe took control before the interval when first Steve Torpey turned in a 35th-minute effort to equalise and then Paul Hayes fired them ahead on the whistle.
Paul Musselwhite kept Scunthorpe ahead with a brilliant stop from Eastwood but he was unable to halt a drive into the top of the net by Jim Corbett in the 63rd minute.
Scunthorpe responded positively again and Hayes grabbed his second to put his side ahead for a second time in the 72nd minute.
That saw the home side take complete control and Darryl Flahavan was called upon to make two excellent saves from man-of-the-match Hayes before he was substituted in the latter stages.
