SUPER MAC SET TO FACE SWANS - 12/09/2003

Young Scottish striker Steve MacLean will make his full home debut for Scunthorpe United against Swansea City tomorrow afternoon.

So far the Glanford Park faithful have seen just fleeting glimpses of the 21-year-old player on loan from Glasgow Rangers. He came on as a late substitute in the last home game against Torquay to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory.

MacLean (pictured right) played a starring role for the Iron in last Saturday's 1-1 draw at Boston and is set to keep his place up front alongside Steve Torpey for tomorrow.

MacLean's emergence has relegated crowd favourite Paul Hayes temporarily to the substitutes' bench.

"Although the player left out might not appreciate it, having real competition for places up front can only be good for this club," said manager Brian Laws.

"No-one likes to be left out of the side - and I would be disappointed with their attitude if they did.

"People forget that Paul is still only 19 years of age and has still not completed his first season in league football.

"He did tremendously well for us last season when we put a lot of responsibility on his shoulders.

"He is a young player we think could have a big future in the game. He will certainly have a big part to play for Scunthorpe United this season.

"Young players have peaks and troughs. Paul has had a peak and is now on a little bit of a down slope.

"I believe it's the right time to rest him and get him back up. His appetite is still there, but mentally he is tired.

"You have to be careful with young players, but we have explained the situation to Paul and I am sure he will bounce back.

"At the moment we have a healthy situation with our forwards. If one doesn't do it, then the other one will. Last week at Boston MacLean showed just what he can do. After a performance like that there was no way we could leave him out of the side for tomorrow."

MacLean is on long-term loan with Scunthorpe until the turn of the year.

"Maybe we will be able to keep him longer, I don't know," said Laws.

"But that decision is still a long way off. Hopefully we will benefit from having Steve here and he will score a lot of goals for us between now and then."
