Back in the spotlight - 11/11/2003

With Steve Torpey being suspended for Saturday’s and the next couple of games, I had a few weeks to train in the knowledge that I’d be playing in the Cup match. The game itself wasn’t anything to get excited about, by no means was it ever a classic! Having said that, it was a classic for me!! It’s all about progressing to the next round, and if we hadn’t have got the win, I think the gaffer would have had a few choice words for us. We didn’t play well, we had possession but weren’t able to create that many chances – in fact, I think Shrewsbury actually had more chances than us.

Credit to them, they were relegated last season and with a new manager in Jimmy Quinn, he looks to have turned things around for them. At 44 he was still able to get their equaliser – not sure if I’ll still be pulling on a shirt at that age!

We were all quite happy with the second round draw – Sheffield Wednesday are a big, big team, although admittedly they’re not having the best of times at present. I dare say they’ll bring a few thousand to Scunthorpe and I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing the atmosphere the tie will generate.

First up it’s Macclesfield this Saturday, and if we are going to continue our rise up the table, we’ll need to go to places like that and pick up points. I honestly don’t know what’s happening with Steven MacLean, if he goes back to Rangers then we’ll miss him – 11 goals in 13 games is pretty impressive. On a selfish note it may open the way for me, and if so, I’ll be working hard to make sure his goal scoring isn’t missed.
