Sorry to see the end of 2004

2004 has been a atrange year for me, the first half was frustrating and disappointing, whereas the second half has been fantastic. The defining aspect is quite simply that from the summer onwards I've been in the team and scoring goals. I'd arrived at Scunthorpe in my first season here and scored goals, going into 2003/4 I'd simply expected that to continue. But for one reason and another I only played a handful of games. I sat on the bench and watched Steve MacLean knock them in knowing that he'd be playing in every game due to the conditions of his loan deal from Rangers. The gaffer played Steve Torpey along side him and I was squeezed out.

Come July Brian Laws took me to one side and told me that he still believed in me and thought that I can make a big impression this season. It was a confidence boost that I needed, not because I didn't have that belief in my own ability, but simply because I had to be in the plans of the manager to give me the chance to perform. The season got underway and as we get into December I have 14 goals. I'm really enjoying my football and things couldn't be much better.

This season the club are flying, we're playing well, getting results and importantly we have squad cover in just about every position. I honestly think we've an excellent chance of automatic promotion. They say football's a funny game but who would have said back in March (when the gaffer left the club) that only six months later we'd be comfortably top of the table and I'd have 14 goals?

But it's no time for complacency and we all know that our focus and commitment has to be maintained all the way through to the end of the season. I might not have liked the start to the year, but as it draws to a close I sorry to say goodbye to 2004!
