A Sheffield Wednesday disaster - 10/10/2003

I couldn’t believe what happened against Sheffield Wednesday last week, the 3-0 scoreline simply didn’t reflect the quality of the teams. We started very brightly and then they scored that spawny goal – the ball came over from a corner kick, hit one of our defenders and went between my legs and over the line. Well I’ve taken some stick about it, but it’s all in good nature as there’s not a lot you can do about things like that.

With the international games meaning there’s no match this weekend, we’d been given a few days off. I thought about going back home to Ireland, but as I’ve mentioned on the web site, I’m not 100% match fit and whilst the rest of the lads no doubt put their feet, up, yours truly was hitting the gym. I’ve been in every day and pushed myself hard – so I’m looking forward to payback time! We’ve Barnet in the cup next, and to be honest, it’s one of those games that we’re expected to win and really, we’ve everything to loose and nothing to gain.

Just a word of congratulations to a man who I really respect…Steve Coppell. He’s a great manager and was a great influence for me in my early days. In taking the step up from Brighton to Reading he’s being rewarded for a lot of hard work and great deal of ability. The only negative thing I can see is that poor old Brighton will have a tough vacancy to fill. I’m sure Reading will move forward and after the disappointment of losing Alan Pardew, the players at the Madjeski will be looking forward to getting back on track. I’m good mates with Steven Sidwell who spent some time with us at Brentford last season, he’s also looking forward Coppell arriving. After dropping down the league in recent games, I’m sure they’ll be moving up shortly.

Enjoy the weekend's football, and I'll see you all at Griffin Park on Tuesday evening.
