Brentford’s Irish eye Saints scalp - 01/03/2005

Three Irish under-21 internationals are expected to start for Brentford tonight (Tuesday) as the Bees take on Premiership side Southampton in an eagerly-awaited FA Cup fifth round replay at Griffin Park.

Waterford native Stephen Hunt has become central to Brentford’s good form over the past month since returning from a long injury absence.

The former Crystal Palace trainee scored his side’s injury time leveller against Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

Another former Irish under-21 international, English-born Kevin O’Connor, is expected to start against Harry Redknapp’s side. The 23-year-old, who can play both in defence and midfield, has made 29 appearances for the Bees this season.

The third member of the Irish contingent expected to be named in boss Martin Allen’s side for the visit of the Saints is diminutive winger Jay Tabb.

Also English-born, the 21-year-old is a current member of Don Givens’s under-21 international and has appeared in 37 of Brentford’s 42 games in all competitions this season.

Veteran defender Scott Fitzgerald, who joined the club from Colchester United last summer, is not expected to start but may be named on the bench by boss Martin Allen.

The 35-year-old has made 14 appearances this season, but has failed to feature in any of the club’s last four outings.
