A Sheffield Wednesday disaster - 10/10/2003

A Sheffield Wednesday disaster

I couldnít believe what happened against Sheffield Wednesday last week, the 3-0 scoreline simply didnít reflect the quality of the teams. We started very brightly and then they scored that spawny goal Ė the ball came over from a corner kick, hit one of our defenders and went between my legs and over the line. Well Iíve taken some stick about it, but itís all in good nature as thereís not a lot you can do about things like that.

With the international games meaning thereís no match this weekend, weíd been given a few days off. I thought about going back home to Ireland, but as Iíve mentioned on the web site, Iím not 100% match fit and whilst the rest of the lads no doubt put their feet, up, yours truly was hitting the gym. Iíve been in every day and pushed myself hard Ė so Iím looking forward to payback time! Weíve Barnet in the cup next, and to be honest, itís one of those games that weíre expected to win and really, weíve everything to loose and nothing to gain.

Just a word of congratulations to a man who I really respectÖSteve Coppell. Heís a great manager and was a great influence for me in my early days. In taking the step up from Brighton to Reading heís being rewarded for a lot of hard work and great deal of ability. The only negative thing I can see is that poor old Brighton will have a tough vacancy to fill. Iím sure Reading will move forward and after the disappointment of losing Alan Pardew, the players at the Madjeski will be looking forward to getting back on track. Iím good mates with Steven Sidwell who spent some time with us at Brentford last season, heís also looking forward Coppell arriving. After dropping down the league in recent games, Iím sure theyíll be moving up shortly.

Enjoy the weekend's football, and I'll see you all at Griffin Park on Tuesday evening.
