Vale keen to take McClen - 26/11/2004
Port Vale are interested in Newcastle United's forgotten midfielder Jamie McClen.
McClen, out of contract at St James' Park next summer, turned out for Vale's reserves in their friendly against Crewe Alexandra on Monday.
The 25-year-old has not made a first-team appearance for the Magpies since the opening day of the 2002/03 season, when he came on as a late substitute in the 4-0 win over West Ham United.
And his last start came in March 2002, when he lined up against Patrick Vieira in United's 1-1 draw against Arsenal at St James' in an FA Cup sixth-round tie.
Since the West Ham game the Cramlington-born player has been restricted to reserve team football, and he was put on the transfer list in June 2003 by Sir Bobby Robson.
But his wages have proved a stumbling block to a move away, and McClen's contract would have to be settled if he was to move before it expires in June next year.
