Squad rotation is a must - 21/09/2003

Squad rotation is a must
You can't play every minute

I think that, quite justifiably so, Chelsea will be all out to win the four competitions they’re entered in this season. In attempting to do so they’ll call upon the full squad – something that a few players seem not too happy with. Personally I just can’t see how any player can expect to take part in every Chelsea first team game. Physically it would be incredibly taxing and more than likely ensure burnout!

It’s therefore interesting to hear the views of people such as Frank Lampard and Damian Duff who’ve let their disappointment be known with the rotation policy. One or tow comments had ben picked up at Frank’s alleged dissatisfaction, but to be fair he’s been at the club for a couple of seasons and joined at a time when the squad certainly wasn’t as large as it is now. He’s also come out and clarified his views recently – stating to the BBC that he supports Ranieri’s policy and mentioning that players are reacting in a positive manner to being ‘rested’.

Damian’s joined the club in a new era and had to be aware that with all Abramovich’s signings, he wouldn’t be playing the full 90 minutes of every game. For Wednesday's Champions League victory over Sparta Prague, Ranieri made seven changes from the side which defeated Tottenham 4-2 in the previous game. This, in my opinion is a perfectly sensible decision and that on reflection has been ore than justified by the results of this season’s game. Complaining about being substituted does no one any favours, and it was interesting to note Ranieir’s reaction to dissent in general "Unhappy players can damage the atmosphere - the players know what can happen if the atmosphere is not good.

"I have spoken to all the players and they accept this. This is a new era for Chelsea.

"Those who understand this rest with us. But if they don't understand this, I am sorry. If anyone is not happy with us, then they will be out."
