A statement - 22/10/2003
After a great deal of media speculation I would like to take this opportunity to clarify my position at Newcastle United.
Today I met with Sir Bobby Robson and I am very glad to report that the meeting was very positive. There had been a misunderstanding and thankfully this has been fully cleared up this afternoon.
I am in my fifth season at St. James Park; my heart is in the club, the city, and with the fans. Many players come and go at clubs, especially foreign players, but one of the reasons why I have stayed here is due to my respect for the fans of Newcastle United. I feel privileged to play in front of them, and if I have one wish in football, it is to help win a trophy for the supporters.
I can confirm that I am as committed to the club as I ever have been, and I’m looking forward to continuing my career with Newcastle United.
