What a World Cup - 12/07/2002

What a World Cup

   World Cup

To be honest I didn’t see a great deal of the finals, in Peru we are 12 hours behind Japan and Korea which meant that the games kicked of at 1.30, 3.30 and 5.30 am. A lot of people watched the games in night-clubs, but hey, I’m a good boy and don’t know anything about those types of places!

Going into the tournament I thought it would be a really open competition, Argentina, France, Italy, England or even Germany all had a fair chance. I must admit that I was as surprised as anyone that France went out the way they did! As for Brazil, they didn’t play well during qualification, but you have to remember that they have the players and that they spent a good month before the tournament sorting out a strategy and learning to play as a team. I would have liked to see England go through against them, but I can’t say it was a surprise that Kieron and the boys lost the game. What you should consider is that this is a very young England, as a team they will improve and I think that they’ll be very strong in the European Championships and the next World Cup.

It’s one of my strong ambitions to play with Peru in the finals, but at the moment we are up against it. You have to appreciate that not a lot of our players are with clubs in the big league’s of Italy, Spain, and England. A few are in Mexico but many still play in Peru. At international level it’s very hard to get results when you’re up against experienced opposition – just look at the league’s the Brazilians play in and compare it to my country. Still, that won’t stop anyone of us trying!
