Magpies duo near to return - 09/10/2003

Newcastle wingers Nolberto Solano and Laurent Robert gave their hopes of a first-team recall a major boost after helping the reserves side to a 3-1 win at Doncaster.

Peruvian Solano smashed home a long-range effort after latching on to a short free-kick from Frenchman Robert.

Solano, who has missed the Magpies' last three games with a groin injury, also played a part for the opener when he put Lomana LuaLua in the clear to strike home.

Robert, who has recently been recalled to the French national side, saw an effort go fractionally wide before LuaLua grabbed his second in the closing moments.

Newcastle's next match is their second-leg Uefa Cup tie against NAC Breda, where they hold a commanding 5-0 aggregate lead.

As a result, Sir Bobby Robson may choose to rest some of his players in order for them to be fresh for the Magpies' next Premiership clash against Middlesbrough, three days later.
