United Res 2 Sunderland Res2 - 05/09/2003

MANCHESTER United defender Mark Lynch saved his side from a second successive home defeat at Altrincham.

The full-back swooped in the 79th minute to grab United's equaliser after Daniel Nardiello's spot-kick - awarded for a Phil Babb foul on Danny Pugh - had been palmed away by Sunderland keeper Michael Ingham.

United had gone behind in the fourth minute when Sunderland's Craig James beat the Reds' defensive wall with a free-kick from the edge of the area.

Nardiello equalised in the 25th minute with a cracking drive, but Sunderland went in front again in the 65th minute when defender Alan Tate headed into his own net.

MAN UTD: B Williams, Lynch, Pugh, Tierney, Tate, Wood, Byrne (Eagles), Fortune, Johnson, Nardiello, Eckersley (Jones).
