Taking a leaf out of stars' books

Football stars are taking part in a pilot scheme to encourage children and adults to read more. Newcastle United has taken up the Premier League Reading Stars project and adopted a local library under the nationwide initiative.

A player from each Premiership club has volunteered to act as a Reading Champion and contribute a favourite book title to a Reading Stars list. At the adopted library, youngsters and parents will meet to review and talk about the books they have read from the list. Newcastle's Reading Champion is full-back Robbie Elliott, who has two young sons. He has chosen Look! There's Elmer, by David McKee, a children's book in which Elmer and a bird play hide and seek.

Robbie said: "It's great to be able to spend quality time with your kids and reading is a fantastic way to do that. My kids enjoy it and I do too. It's educational for them, as well as fun."
