A review of the season - 24/05/2004

A review of the season
Shola - if he keeps improving...

 Clubs:
   Newcastle United

1 - Who is your  'player of the season'?

Shay Given, the epitomy of consistency.

2 - Who is your 'young player of the season'?

Shola Ameobi, he’s come on so much this season and is now a real handful for defenders. He’s using his height and strength well, but his footwork is exceptional for a player of his height and if he continues to develop at this rate, he could really be a special player.

3 - Best game of the season?

Southampton away in the cup. An excellent performance all round, just a shame that they fell in the next round against Liverpool.

4 - Best goal?

Robert’s second against Tottenham, I know that ITV awarded the first one ‘goal of the month’, but the way he took the ball down and then hammered the ball was quite fantastic.

5 - Worst game?

Wolves at home, a 1-1draw against a side already relegated when we had the incentive of finishing fourth was shocking. I really do believe that if we’d won that game we’d have pipped Liverpool for the final spot.

6 - Best ground/atmosphere visited?

Marseille away - it was quite a sight seeing about 60,000 people jumping about and waving their arms.

7 - Hopes for next season?

It has to be qualification for the Champions League with a top four finish. Obviously winning a competition would be great, but Champions League status is all important for attracting players and revenue. The fourth place is wide open and whilst catching Arsenal, Chelsea, or Man Utd will be very difficult, another season away from the top competition will undermine the progress made over the last few years.
